Is there any chance you can give us some text from the article? Do you know what regiment(s) the uncles were in?

The Battle of Memphis was a strictly naval affair on June 6, 1862. However, there were a number of minor skirmishes in the area during the war and one large raid by Forrest on August 21, 1864. Wikipedia incorrectly calls this "The Second Battle of Memphis."

Hooker's Bend was a small community on the Tennessee River in Hardin County, TN near the town of Saltillo. Some of the locals still refer to the area as Hooker's Bend but it doesn't show on the maps.

All three of these "battles" were in West Tennessee. I put quotation marks around battle as it is a name too often given to any armed engagement. When the publishers of the "War of the Rebellion: The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies" set out on that monumental 128 volume series, they set specific protocols on what would be considered a battle. They also laid out the criteria for "encounters" "engagements" "skirmishes" "actions" etc. I don't have the specifics at hand but I do recall that the criteria for a "battle" was that each side had to have an army or a major part of an army such as a corps. This never stopped newspapers, citizens, or soldiers from calling a fight a "battle" when it was actually a much smaller affair.

If I knew more about the content of the article I might be able dig some details.

All the best,

Tom
