Resigning Commissioin

My ancestor, Hiram A. Box, Company F, 4th Mississippi Infantry Regt. was elected 3rd Lt. and served with the Co F from his enlistment Aug 24, 1861 to his resignation of his Commission at Lovejoy Station following the Atlanta Campaign. I am not sure if he continued in the Company following his resignation or fought in the battles of Franklin, TN or Nashville and beyond. Does anyone know what usually happened to an officer after resigning their commission. Do they just go home. He died in 1921 so I know he survived the war.
