My understanding is that officers could resign and were not required to serve thereafter.

There was a H. A. Box who served with Yeager’s, 12th Cavalry Regiment. I cannot confirm if this is the same man.

Hiram A. Box, Company F, 4th Mississippi Infantry Regt. was elected 3rd Lt. and served with the Co F from his enlistment Aug 24, 1861 to his resignation of his Commission at Lovejoy Station following the Atlanta Campaign.

Hiram A. Box, age 28, Orderly (First) Sergeant, Captain W. A. Sumner’s Company, 4th Regiment Mississippi Volunteers,* enlisted August 24, 1861 at Grenada by Maj. Layton for 12 months, captured at Fort Donelson February 16, 1862, imprisoned at Camp Morton, Indiana, elected 3rd Lieutenant September 26, 1862, captured at Vicksburg, Miss. July 4, 1863, paroled July 8, 1863, resigned October 22, 1864,** no further records

* This company subsequently became Company F, 4th Regiment Mississippi Infantry

** “ . . . has been in the infantry service for three years and desires to change to another branch of the service”
