Hello again Kim, A question for you. What does Hamiton Hadsell's tombstone say exactly. I've saw his stone on Find A Grave but upon looking closely I can't tell if someone draped a cloth over his tombstone or if it reads as it does on Find A Grave.

There is overwhelming documentation in my opinion that Hamilton Hadsell was a Union soldier. However according to the national grave locator which is part of the United States Department of Veteran Affairs the following is noted.

Hamilton R. Hadsell forever broke his ties with the Confederate Army when he enlisted as a Union soldier at Fort Delaware in September 1863. Not to mention coming back to Mississippi and fighting against his native state. Since you live in Belmont County, Ohio and have an interest in the War Between the States perhaps you can help change his status to a Union soldier instead of a Confederate soldier? For that is what he was, a Federal United States soldier.

His brother Felix had to be careful when applying for his pension records. Felix never disclosed to the bureau of pensions that he had been a former Confederate soldier. If he would have it might have put his pension in jeopardy. As stated earlier Felix was a little smarter than Hamilton.

It would be interesting to know what ever became of Hamilton's wife, Alice and his two young daughters. I provided the library with Felix's pension records in February of this year by email.
