No apology needed! I thought perhaps you were on to something new that normally does not get discussed in relation to Vicksburg.

Technically, the Vicksburg parole was an oath - a sworn personal promise - but the term is most often used to describe the Oath of Allegiance or the Amnesty Oath. both of which represented a changing of allegiance. The military parole given at Vicksburg was simply a promise to cease and desist until one was released from the obligation in exchange for freedom from confinement. In pro-Union ideology, one can never ever be relieved of the promises set forth in the Oath of Allegiance or Presidential Amnesty Oath once the oath is taken.

Memorial Day Weekend is here once again and our Confederate ancestors are not always included in this national time of remembrance. Thank you for all the hard work that you do to preserve and honor their memory!
