my gg grandfather james martin b. 1826 from smith co., ms. was in the 37th ms. co. G., he had been in the seige of vicksburg. he was paroled at vicksburg, miss on july 6, 1863. i have not found his name listed w the 37th ms. after vicksburg. my g grandfather jackson s. martin told my father that james martin's job was to catch deserters during the civil war. i wonder due t his age and physical condition after vicksburg ( also he had been in the holly springs hospital oct. 16, 1862) that he was asigned to catch deserters by the army. the men that did that were they in the army? is there any information out there about the men who caught the army deserters? he was from taylorsville, smith co. , mississippi.
