Re: North Georgia/Chattanooga visit

Thanks for the compliments on the website. It has been a labor of love by many, many, many people. Big thnsk go to Jamie Roberts the webmaster. As for you question about Richard Pittman being buried at Marietta, that has not been proved. We believe that he was buried on the battlefield and "could have been" relocated to the Marietta Confederate Cemetery after the war. The reason we say could have been relocated is that the records of the burials at Marietta are incomplete. The survey of the names in the cemetery was not completed prior to the wooden crosses deteriorating. The men buried there were exhumed from their battlefield and wayside hospital locations after the war. Those who could be identified by either a marker, carving on a nearby tree, or some other means of identification were identified with wooden markers at Marietta. The unknown remains were also buried there with wooden markers; Pittman could be among them. Men from a train wreck in September of 1863 near Emerson, GA were the first to be buried there when the land was acquired and set aside for the soldiers. Later men from nearby Marietta hospitals were buried there. After the war men from the Confederate home were also buried there.
