Mitchell, we've now had a chance to work through the 51 names on the Memphis Daily Avalanche list of those reportedly buried at Iuka, Miss., by Samuel Dewoody in 1866. I certainly appreciate that lead!

Most (but not all), of the names on Dewoody's list turned out to be men who were wounded in the second Battle of Corinth or at Hatchie Bridge, 3-5 October 1862, who were then in short order sent to the U.S. hospital at Iuka as prisoners, died of wounds or disease and were evidently buried at there.

Of those men for whom Service Records were located, there are a handful who clearly died at Iuka far too early in the year to include among the "most likely" candidates for the mass battlefield burial at Shady Grove.

That said, we have now positively identified 161 men who died AT IUKA (variety of causes) from the date of the battle (19-20) September on through the end of December 1862. Trying to judge their likelihood for being buried in that particular grave is another story!

The only remaining regiment that was engaged in the Battle of Iuka for which we've yet to work through the rosters and rolls is the 38th Mississippi Infantry (Mounted) Regiment. But I hope to finish that task soon.

We'll be posting those names along with all the other regiments involved in the fight at Iuka on the various state boards for Arkansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Texas and Alabama, as we did for the 36th, 37th and 40th Mississippi, in hopes that others – like you – may be able to point us toward any information sources we had not found on our own.

Thanks again!
-Chip Culpepper (for Kenneth Byrd)
