Re: 1862 fatalities from Missouri guerrilla war

Thank you, Bruce. I am delighted to get your response. Jeremiah lived in the Everett area of Cass County (Amarugia, to be exact). William F. Pulliam lived just North of Jeremiah, however, a John W. Pulliam had land adjacent to Jeremiah. My guess is William F. is “Bill.”

Yes, according to Jeremiah’s claim, he was arrested and thrown in a KC prison in December 1861. I didn’t even think about attaching the claim. It is rather large, 19mb, so not even sure I can. By the way, I think he filed three times and each time it was rejected. The reason being he had never proven his loyalty and the claim wasn’t just.

A search on MO SOS Archives Web site last week resulted in a letter written in Nov 1863 by a young woman whose family, neighbors of Jeremiah, had fled Cass County to Kentucky just weeks earlier. She asked how Mr. Jerry Jones was, saying he was in a KC prison when they left. Based on date of her letter this would be a second imprisonment for Jeremiah.

A Google search for “Jerry Jones, Civil War Prisoner” brought up the excerpt from your book. This put me in high-gear to find anything I can on Jeremiah. From Missouri Archives Web page, Provost Marshal database, I found a document where Jerry and Bill are both on a list of “Rebels”, names provided by A.G. and Sam Tipton (neighbors). Found another document with names of folks who had to post bond and Jerry is on it.

My speculation is that Jeremiah’s hearing in Paola before the military commission resulted in his being sent to prison. After several months, in order to get released, he agreed to fight for the Union enlisting in Company G, 15th Regiment Kansas Cavalry in March 1864.

I need to find documentation to confirm my suspicions that Jerry Jones the bushwhacker is my 2nd grt-grandfather, Jeremiah M. Jones. Am so hoping to unravel the mystery that surrounds him.

Thanks again for your time and consideration in fielding my query.
