Re: Had a lot of Ballard's ammunition

In the Study by William B. Lee called "Archaeology of the Mine Creek Civil War Battlefield, (available on line)

He states that he found what looked like .44 Ballard rimfire cartridges at the location where the Missouri State Militia Cavalry would have been present.

Since, they weren't issured Ballard weapons, he assumed that those cartridges were perhaps dual usage cartridges,

And since the Henry rifle was reported as being the weapon used by the MSM by Buresh (in his 1977 book on Mine Creek), they must be for the Henry rifle .

However, I'm thinking that Ballard .44 rimfire cartridges may be also used in the Wesson. The Wesson was known to have been privately purchased by

many members of the Missouri State Militia Cavalry.

Are there any thoughts out there on the ID of those cartridges, and what weapons were used by the MSM at the Battle of Mine Creek?
