Related to guns having 5 lands and grooves.
in 'The Gunsmith's Manual: Practical Guide to all Branches of the Trade", http://books.google.com/books?id=4kxHAwAAQBAJ&pg=PA136&lpg=PA136&dq=lands+grooves+%22Frank+Wesson%22+rifles&source=bl&ots=j54FnaFmu7&sig=pcMPD6OtHlq-Y5Ap7j3BQjSIdc0&hl=en&sa=X&ei=XKjqU9_3BY2LyASwlID4Cg&ved=0CCUQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=lands%20grooves%20%22Frank%20Wesson%22%20rifles&f=false,
on page 136 (apparently, page wasn't numbered), it shows Wesson's Breech loader having 5 and 6 grooves, I assume two varieties, or perhaps varying by caliber. Lands and grooves of equal width (unlike the recovered bullet).
Unfortunately, some pages were not available on the internet, the ones immediately before the Wesson rifle. Therefore, I found nothing on the Henry or Ballard. If anyone has the book, perhaps they can give us the land/groove information.
From what I've seen, it does look like some Ballards have 5 land/grooves.
In http://books.google.com/books?id=iSUA23jOi1sC&pg=PA165&lpg=PA165&dq=henry+rifling+six+grooves&source=bl&ots=ciMWEDBY7k&sig=5c8hGFFsgrFObHU-7EmsH4Mh7k4&hl=en&sa=X&ei=RavqU6_0LYWMyATSioGgBQ&ved=0CCQQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=henry%20rifling%20six%20grooves&f=false, it shows the Henry also with five groove, right-hand-twist.
Thanks,
