To add to the mix, I cannot recall the exact reference from the War of the Rebellion files but "Smith and Wesson" carbines were issued to Union militia at the Waynesville fort but in later reports it was corrected to Smith carbines. I'm sure is was a common mistake. With a new weapon called 'Smith', most were familiar with the Smith and Wesson name and its association with firearms but not just Smith. Same problem with the name Colt being used for all revolvers by someone who was unfamiliar with the technicalities.
