Re: Pacific City, MO (AKA Syracuse)

I think the burning of the entire town, other than the mule barn, isn't correct, as the Presbyterian Church was reported to have been built in 1859. It was utilized as a Fed. barracks, then hospital and convelescant hospital during some of this time.
As many as 20 Fed. soldiers per home, were reported to have stayed in a few individual homes. The homes may have been outside the city limits, but as Bruce Nichols reported, they would have probably been protecting the rail line and the crossings at the Lamine River.

Near Otterville, on the presently designated Dept. of Conservation land, there was a reported encampment. Evidence of the encampment has been found.

The garrisoned Federal troops at Tipton formed the martial law for the area, which included the county seat of Morgan County at Versailles. A General Palmer was there at a time that 300 Federals marched to Versailles after a reported harassment of a Fed. individual. Dr. John B.Thruston (who had several of his sons killed during the C.W. for the Confederate side) prevented retaliation at Versailles. The good Dr. had protected the Fed. individual and reported to General Palmer his version of the happenings. Gen. Palmer turned back to Tipton when he was convinced the town hadn't mistreated the man who had reported he'd been detained and threatened.

In our local areas, many Civil War stories are unsubstantiated, word of mouth, family stories and undocumented, but if one can unearth the true happenings, found to be most interesting.
