I was visiting my mother at the nursing home in Wellsville this morning and got in a discussion of the civil war with one of the nurses. She told me about some "confederate soldiers" killed in the "skirmish at Centralia. The local story is "Wellsville was the closest place that would take them".
At the cemetery I found a stone that simply stated NINE UNKNOWN CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS. Found a stone for THOMAS MCELFRESH, CO. B 11TH OHIO CAV. A stone for WAYMON HOLLIDAY CO. D 9TH MSM CAV. Also found a stone for, almost illegible for LT COL J.B. COPT-IAW- possibly 6th Pa. None of the stones had dates.
Did Anderson lose 9 men at Centralia? Could these 9 unknowns be from another action near the railroad in Montgomery, Audrain, Boone, or Ralls counties?
