My ancestor Caswell (aka Cass or Kass) Rose died at the Centralia Massacre and we have been gathering documentation on him & the Centralia Massacre for many years. Thanks to the kindness of so many other Civil War researchers, we have been able to connect with many details of this sad event.
From his Civil War record & Widow's Pension file we find the date of death given as 27 Sept 1864........... and I always thought the "Battle" took place a few days later. Many records show the two events happened on the same day.
But recently I found an article stating the Massacre really took place earlier and the Battle took place on 27 Sept 1864..............
Did the government lump the two event dates as one on their official records??
Or did the two events take place on different dates?
Did Major Johnston really just happen to be in the area & attack the same day?
Concentrating so much on the details of the Centralia Massacre, I never gave it much thought till now.
Thank you
