If you spelled your name with one L (wiLhite) you are more likely southern in sympathies. In fact I rarely found a Confederate soldier from Missouri with 2 LL's (wiLLhite).
Hamitt or Hammitt Wilhite was listed in Quantrill's Reg't. He was captured twice as was James F/T Wilhite of Cooper County. They both show up at different times in the rolls of Myrtle Street, Gratiot, and Alton and spent time in each. Sometimes listed as J. James, J.T. J.F. Hamit, H, Hemitt, Hammit thus I counted nearly 10 different entries for these same two guys. In fact I can only account for one other Missouri Wilhite in the prison system, Q. which I think was a relative to Hammitt listed early in 1865.
It took me awhile to figure out James F (F being the real initial) was also recorded in many indicies as James T. There is no doubt in my mind they are one and the same. I at first thought they may have been 2 different men thus possibly James T being the one Capt. Box was writing about.
Secondly sometimes we miss sequence meaning in the OR reports.
Note Crittenden's report listed "Col Eades" as the leader and was written Oct 9, just 4 days after the event likely from a verbal report. He did not forward Box's report as an attachement.
Then Box writes his report Nov. 1 ! Ergo Box now knows Eades was not a Colonel thus does not mention him and we have Wilhite name produced with a former slave captured who may have once been owned by a Wilhite. Not a far stretch of the imagination that Box assumes "LtC Wilhite" was with group. Eades may very well have been the defacto leader of the group, he knew James Wilhite well. Knew Jackman. He was older than the average bear in the woods at 50. I'll check the 1860 slave schedules to see if I can weed out some Wilhites that way. Just though of it....
