Oddly enough, I was just through Keokuk yesterday - barely long enough to crack open a microfilm case but did so. I was checking an article in the Keokuk Constitution that was reprinted in a Quincy (IL) paper regarding a relative who was lynched just after the close of the official war's hostilities. While I don't know if the article is making reference to my relative from Lincoln County, MO, the writers thought they might be and claimed to have him locked in one the guardhouses in Keokuk for desertion. The tie into the thread is this - I've no official record that my relative served in either the Union or the CS armies but do know from other readings, that one fella with him - Salvata or Salvator(e) Barnisconi (multiple ways to spell this last name) in Quincy claimed to have left the Union army to join the Confederates. 1870 census records show a family by that name in Keokuk and the business directory for 1876 also lists the name. In 1862 the name appears as a family who donated money to the Union cause. No idea why my family member was in Iowa but if hanging out with Barnisconi perhaps Barnisconi was enough reason to go up there.

Anyhow, just throwing the name out for another possible lead in your quest. I don't know what Confederate outfit Barnisconi was in but do know that he rode with Tom Rose of Lincoln County, Missouri until his (Salvator's) arrest in Quincy and then it all fell apart and Tom was lynched as a 'bushwhacker.' Salvator and others received jail time I believe.
