Yes, I have seen records about bonds for that amount several times. It worked just like a bail bond works in modern times. Basically, the bond payer puts up the money to certify his future "good behavior" and he forfeits the amount or that amount in collateral if the authority finds the bond payer failed to act in good faith or failed the specifics of the oath he took. To forfeit in Missouri during the Civil War under martial law usually meant serving a sentence in one of the military prisons and/or banishment from Missouri, plus loss of the bond amount.
