Loyalty Oath and Bond

My gg-grandfather had to sign an Oath, and post a $1000 Bond, for aiding the ememy during the war. I have always heard that $1 then, is about $70 today, but a $70,000 bond seems kind of steep for a common farmer to pay... Can anyone here confirm the dollar conversion? Is anyone here familiar with bonds of the era and how they worked?

Thanks!

HB
