Today I located a document that confuses me further. Up until now I thought the Cove might have been located closer to the Texas line, however, after reading this I'm not so certain. Here's the source and what I have read. (printed as is, mispelled words and all)...
Source :The Calcasieu River Guards It's Secrets-Some Notes About Early Grand Chenier, Louisiana-by W.T. Block
"In March 1864 Cpt. Howerton wrote that...Dr. McCall is dawn from Chenier. He reports that Col. Vincent and Louisiana Cavalry are attacking the Mermentau. So far 9 have been killed many more captured and they are still fighting at Tousand's Cove".
This reports mentions the Confederate force envolved and "attacking the Mermentau"...
I now believe that Dr. McCall would have concerned himself more with affairs occuring along the Mermentau River, (he lived at Grand Chemier), as opposed to the affairs occuring along the Texas border.I also wonder if these Jayhawkers, that this report claims is attacked by Col. Vincent, are the same Jayhawkers that attempt to sell cattle to the Union on 5.6.64 which envolved the U.S. Wave, Granite City, New London...also, there were blockade runners,Antelope and others, near Lacassine at this time which would have attracted Jayhawkers closer to the Mermentau side...and also this source spelled the Cove differently.lol...
All points to ponder and perhaps we'll never know, but I will keep trying. Thank You for all help !
