Here is a transcription of Genl. Orders No. 41 ordering the execution [murder] of Richard H. Glaze:

Headquarters Advance Brigade U. S. forces Bayou Boeuf 4 ½ miles beyond Cheneyville La May 6th, 1863

Special Order No. 41

R. H. Glaze a Sergeant of the 8th Regiment Louisiana Volunteers serving in Virginia and lately a Private in Captain Murdock’s Independent Company serving on the Bayou Boeuf and now by his own admission being entirely disconnected with regular Military Organizations in the service of the so-called Confederate States of America, having been captured by our “Advanced Guard” he being mounted with his overcoat strapped upon his saddle, and in his possession to wit a Kentucky rifle, evidently for the purpose of shooting down our soldiers. It is ordered by the Brig. General Commanding the Advance, that the same R. H. Glaze be shot to death at sunrise tomorrow morning May 7th 1863 as a warning to all more not soldiers to remain presently at their homes if they desire the protection of the Government of the United States, and the fate of this man shall be the fate of any man found with arms in his hands not belonging to the so-called term of the Confederate States of America. Colonel Van Zandt, Commanding the 91st Regt. New York Volunteers will detail one Sergeant and Five (5) Privates to carry this order into effect.
By Command of William Dwight, Brig. Gen
Commanding Advance Brigade
