28th louisiana infantry
In Response To: Re: Captain Howard Dwight ()

In another issue, I recently read 2 articles concerning the (C.S.A.) 28th La. Inf. that puzzled me, both concerning troop movement, and mutinies in Louisiana, in August of 1863.
The first stated that on August the 1st,1863 the 28th La. Inf. was brought into New Iberia,La. to quell a mutiny from Col. J.P. Major's Tx. Reg.. The reason for the mutiny, or attempted mutiny, was never stated and I was unable to recover any additional information concerning this event. However, this may fit because from 7.23.63-9.18.63 the 28th La. Inf. is in the Vermilionville, La. area, and, New Iberia,La. is just a few miles Eastward.
The second article mentioned the 28th La. Inf. and Col. Franklin Clack Battn. ( 12th La. Inf. ?) were brought into Abbyville,La.on August 23.1863 to quell a mutiny from Texas forces that refused to cross the Mississippi River. I believe this occurred at Sicily Island, La. ,in which 400 of Walkers men deserted. 200 of which returned and 1 Tx. officer and 10 enlisted men were later rounded up by the forces of Gen. Taylor and hanged.I presuming the Abbyville,La. mentioned in their (28th La. Inf.) troop movement sheets has nothing to do with Abbeville,La., a town located on La. 14 just West of New Iberia,La. and a little South of Vermilionville. I can not locate anything that is spelled Abbyville around the Sicily Island, La.location... Abbeville,La.( La.14) was on 1863 civil war maps, and I'm wondering could the 28th La. Inf. have participated in the quelling of both mutinies- Aug.1.1863 New Iberia,La. and Agu. 23.1863 Sicily Island ? And where is Abbyville,La. ?
Any additional information concerning either mutiny / location will be deeply appreciated.
