In his diary, Felix Poche (A Louisiana Confederate: Diary of Felix Pierre Poche, p. 23) reported on August 23, 1863, that the 18th and 28th La., Clack's Battalion, and the Pelican and Semmes' batteries received orders to march to Abbeville and New Iberia. He "supposed" it was to quell a mutiny among Col. Major's command but does not state that for sure. Noted historian Ed Bearss edited the diary and in his footnotes he seems to agree it was to quell a mutiny among the Texans. Silas Grisamore (The Civil War Reminiscences of Major Silas T. Grisamore, p. 126) also says the 18th La. was ordered to Abbeville on August 23, 1863, and stayed there until August 29 but he does not mention the purpose of the move.

I probably contributed to the confusion. In my article "The 28th Louisiana Volunteers in the Civil War" I mistakenly said this occurred on August 28. It was a typo.
