affair at petite anse island,Nov.21-22-1862
In Response To: Re: battle of labedieville ()

In searching for the complete story of the Affair at Petite Anse Island, Nov.21-22.1862, I've ran across 3 articles that pertain to the event, more or less, and I'm trying to establish fact from fiction.

art #1- http://cwbullet.org/bullet-relic-forum/archive/index.php/t-6747.html
art # 2-war of the rebellion-series 1 vol.15 part 1 p. 1088
art #3-Department of the gulf,an immense salt mine in western louisiana-the island of petite anse a rock of solid salt-the operation of commodore Bucanan &c. I have the report of C.S.A. Cpt. T..Faries, War of the Rebellion mentioned above), in this report Faries mentions 2 union gunboats at the mouth of Petite Anse in Vermilion Bay in which the C.S.A. forces fired upon / observed until Monday November 24,1862 at which time Faries withdrew. Faries makes no mention as to the disposition of the 2 Union ships. In the article of Department of the Gulf, an immense salt mine...this article mentions that the U.S. Diana,Kinsman, St. Marys and the 21st Indiana Artillery attempted to destroy the Petite Island salt mine... This article goes on to describe the action against the C.S. Cotton...
The article http://cw/bullet...describes recovered cannon sabot found in the immediate vicinity of Petite Anse Bayou and suggest that 2 union gunboats became grounded in Petite Anse Bayou by an approaching cold front and the crew may have jettisoned the sabot's overboard. The article goes on to suggest that in the course of the next 15-20 days the 2 union gunboats were freed, but one, the U.S. Grey Cloud ran aground further down stream and lies there still.
My questions are:
What were the names of the Union ships in Vermilion Bay and the forces aboard them ?
Were they sent there to destroy Petite Island Salt Mine by long range cannon fire / ground forces, and what became of the ships ?
Is there any truth to the 2 (or 3) Union ships becoming mired in the mud up river in Bayou Petite Anse for 15-20 days, and the U.S.Grey Cloud being scuttled there ?
