Wayne, I agree that there are just some questions we'll probably never have answers to. Off the topic, but another one I've always wondered about was why the 9th Louisiana (Peck's regiment) was transferred from Hays' Brigade to Starke's Brigade (with the 14th Louisiana transferring to Hays' Brigade) just before the Battle of Antietam. The two regiments returned to their original brigades shortly after the campaign ended. I've never found an explanation for the changes. On an unrelated note, Peck stood 6'6" and was known in the army as "Big Peck," and the 9th Louisiana produced three generals (Richard Taylor, Leroy Stafford, and William R. Peck).
