Just to pipe in...........I have looked at thousands of Compiled Service Records and found the word "deserted" used quite commonly, and many times erroneously, but have seldom seen the acronym AWOL used. My research has been primarily about the ANV. Was AWOL frequently used in the records of the Trans-Mississippi?
