Re: Thomas P. Johnson---Lexington Battalion

Hi, Bruce. Nice to hear from you. Congrats on the book---a tremendously useful resource. I've got nothing new on Madison. At this point, you probably know more than I do. I have no record of him before the Crabb expedition (if he was in CA, I've found no trace of him). His service record, which I'm sure you've scoured, is available on FOOTNOTE now, but I'm waiting for more CW records to be uploaded to their database (I've got about 60 to look at) before I take the plunge myself (I'm especially looking forward to seeing our old friend Robert C. Wood's record. Too bad no photo of him has turned up--I managed to track one down of his friend Charles W. Tozer, who along with Wood were split off from Crabb's force to obtain recruits in Tucson.). I've seen the references to Madison in Thompson's book and "The Civil War in the Southwest," and know in a general way about the Brigands, the TX colonelcy, the 1860 census (AZ, 30 yrs old, NY merchant), etc., but I know nothing about his ancestry or his activities before or after the war. A quick scan on GenealogyBank (a pretty decent resource for newspapers) yielded nothing. I'm pretty sure the Thomas Johnson you refer to is a different one---too old for my guy.
