Re: Thomas P. Johnson---Lexington Battalion

Chris: The photo of Johnson is in "Colonel Jack Hays" by James Kimmins Greer, revised edition, 1974. The first and 2nd editions were in 1952 and did not contain all of the photographs that are in the 1974 edition. The photo is Plate 19, showing Sheriff Hays with 3 of his deputies: John Caperton, John Freaner, and T.P. Johnson. Not the best reproduction in the world, but Johnson looks very young. As I mentioned, he was appointed Sheriff on June 17, 1853 and stood for election in September. He lost. He ran again in September 1855 and lost again. During his short term as Sheriff, his Undersheriff, John Freaner, was in a gunfight with a "squatter" as Fraener attempted to serve a writ of ejectment. Both parties were severely wounded. That's about all I know at this point, except that Fraener lived. From your narrative, it sounds like he had had enough of SF by '56 or '57 and moved back East. (I'm being interrupted, so I'll finish this later.)
