You are more than correct in your observations concerning water depth at that place at that time. In my child like mind I did not take that into account. I was aware of it but at the same time I have to believe that when you are running for your very life itself cannon and supply wagons would have been pretty low on the priory pole as to holding you back. I personally don't believe this was a raid of plunder and booty but one that Morgan wanted to take the war north to give the yankee a taste of it and to regain some lustre to the Generals reputation. Not to mention it was a move made against orders.
Never the less your point is well taken, although I believe that exhaustion, as you so aptly pointed out, was the major cause of its failure.
We could discuss the water level as to an obstacle in his escape attempt, and an escape is what it had become not a withdrawal, for quite a spell but since Morgan never tried we will never know for sure - Eh?
