The May/June 1864 Muster Roll is the last known surviving muster roll for the unit. The Third, as part of Forrest's Kentucky Brigade, spent much of its time in 1864 and 1865 in reduced size groups carrying out recruiting, replenishing, and other actions in their home territory of the Jackson Purchase of Kentucky (west of the Tennessee River). Many of these men were performing these duties up to the end. Others were with the main army in May 1865 and were allowed to leave without surrendering. We may never know where Crooks was.
