Devil's Backbone

Hello All,

I'm trying to figure out which units participated in the 1863 Fort Smith Campaign and battle.

I believe Col. Cloud's Brigade consisted of the 2nd KS and 6th MO St Cavalry Regiments, a battalion of the 8th MO St Cavalry Regiment, the 1st AR Infantry (USA) Regiment, and two sections of Rabb's 2nd IN Lt Artillery.

I'm not sure which other Union forces were involved here. I know Gen. Blunt was in overall command though he was ill part of the time.

For the Confederates, I believe Caball's Brigade was listed as having 3 cavalry regiments, a cavalry battalion, an infantry regiment, and an artillery battery. I think these were the 1st AR and 1st AR St Cavalry, Hill's Cavalry Battalion, and Hughey's Artillery. I have no idea what the third cavalry regiment or the infantry regiment might have been. I believe that the 26th AR Infantry and Fitzwilliams' Volunteers were posted at Fort Smith around this time.

Any additional information and corrections to the above would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Manny
