Re: Surry Light Artillery flag acceptance speech

I don't have answers to either of your questions.

McCabe's father was an Episcopal rector in (neighboring to Surry County) Isle of Wight County in the 1850s. My letters have references to the McCabes, the death of his sister, and possible notes by McCabe's father on a writing of Hankins' sister. I also have a copies of an inspection notice to Hankins from McCabe during the war, and a writing in which McCabe was passing along his superior's accolades.

Any idea what happened to the SLA's flags?

One of my cousins wrote me, a couple of years ago, that they'd found some buttons and some cloth that had belonged to Hankins. My heart started jumping! I asked the husband of the relative who had them to show them to me. Tough times, though - his wife was dying, finally did pass away a few months ago. I saw the relative several days ago, he said he was sifting through boxes, he'd let me know if & when he found them. I'm hoping there is a couple of coat buttons, maybe a piece of a flag out there.

If you're interested in McCabe, I can email you those documents.
