Re: CS flags captured at Williamsburg and Yorktown

Colonel Thomas Goode's, Third Virginia Cavalry Regiment, lost a guidon to the Eight Illinois Cavalry Regiment. In turn, the Eight Illinois Cavalry regiment lost a guidon to the Third Virginia Cavalry. Now, it is my belief, that guidon was later handed to Lieutenant George Armstrong and he rode back to Headquarters and "Claimed" he had captured the guidon. This was a lie of course, Lieutenant Farquire?? (I am certain I am typing his last name wrong) either captured the guidon or was handed it from one of his enlisted soldiers.

As Gregg pointed out, it certainly was not the Fifth North Carolina's flag they lost to Brigadier General Hancock's brigade. The Official Records (11) Page 444 is my source. "Captured the enemy's flag, the First Rhode Island Cavalry Regiment, color-sergeant, G.A. Roberts saved the "Regimental Standard". This cavalry battle/skirmish took place on May 8th, 1862. The Eight Illinois lost that guidon.

I only work on Union Infantry flags, Cavalry flags/guidons and Artillery captured. I will type that the Confederates captured probably in the range of 10-15 flags. Brigadier General Sickles's New York brigade lost a number of flags. The Seventy-First New York Infantry was detached and did not fight in the battle. Colonel Dwight (70th NY Commander) was either shot or hit with something and was knocked out. When he woke up, he was surrounded by Confederates. Colonel Dwight had the National Flag and that was captured. Brigadier General Patterson's Second New Jersey brigade (5th-6th-7th-8th) were hit very hard. The Fifth NJ was detached guarding Major Wainwright's improvised battery (8 Guns). The 6th-7th-8th took brutal losses, around one-third loss. They lost many flags/guidons.

According to Major-General A.P. Hill, (OR 11) Page 561, "Four artillery and Eight flags were captured." OR (11) Page 430, "Private John Thompson, captured a guidon from the enemy". (3rd US "C" battery.)

Private James D. Walkup, Company K (11st Virginia Infantry Regiment) captured "A Stand of Colors". The 11th Va reported they captured "One flag" during the entire battle.
Private Travers, Company H (17th Virginia Infantry Regiment) "Took a stand of colors with his own hands."

Union order of battle (Cavalry)

1st US Cav, 6th US Cav, 3rd PA Cav and 8th Ill Cav. Horse Artillery (3rd US, "C") and (2nd US "M").

As everyone reading this well knows, that neither side turned in all flags/guidons from battles. Thus, why I will raise the total count a little bit higher.

Have a good weekend,

Shawn Prouty
