Gents,

The rectangular battle flag seen in the upcoming Gettysburg film is actually the 1864 Augusta Depot made battle flag for the Confederate Army of Tennessee. These were first issued in January 1864 through march to the regiments of that army and were first used in the fighting around Dalton, GA in February 1864 and then the Atlanta Campaign through the rest of the war.

The Second CS Navy Jack came into being in May 1863 when the Second National flag was adopted. Naval Jacks are flags flown from the bow staff of a warship while that ship is in port only. Following British naval tradition, the jacks of the US and CS Navy were the cantons of the national flag in a somewhat rectangular format. The First CS Navy Jack was blue with a circle of white stars taken from the First National flag. This was replaced by the second naval jack as stated.
