10th Arkansas Militia 396 Enlistments
This was one of two Johnson County Militia units that formed a part of the antebellum militia organization of Arkansas. The unit was assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, Provisional Army of Arkansas. In February 1862, Confederate Major General Benjamin McCulloch issued a proclamation from Fayetteville calling upon the men of Arkansas to form companies to resist the invasion of Northern troops that had entered the northwest part of the state. Arkansas state Brigadier General Napoleon Bonaparte Burrow responded by activating the six militia regiments in his command and the 10th Militia was mustered at Clarksville. The men of the 10th Militia reported on 20 February and were discharged on 19 March. Company B reported 99 men present, but most of the companies contained far fewer, with some reporting just 38 men present (Companies A, F, and G). After the expiration of their term, many enlisted in other units forming for the war. Unless otherwise noted within their individual roster entries, all the men served, during the muster, for not more than 27 days.
