7th Arkansas Cavalry Regiment 321 Enlistments

The core of the Seventh Arkansas Cavalry originated with the five companies (A, B, C, D, and E), composing [Colonel John F.] Hill's Cavalry Battalion. This unit had seen action through 1863 in both Arkansas and the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). On 25 July 1863, Hill was ordered to attempt to increase his command to a regiment. In the autumn and winter of 1863, five other cavalry companies were added to Hill's Battalion to create the 7th Arkansas Cavalry. Hill remained as Colonel of the new unit. Oliver Basham was elected Lieutenant Colonel (killed at Pilot Knob, Missouri), with James L. Adams and later John C. Ward acting as Major. John W. Halliburton was elected Adjutant and Mark A.J. Bonville was Quarter Master Captain. R. Linthicum was the regimental surgeon.
