4th (Gordon’s) Arkansas Cavalry Regiment 208 Enlistments

There is often some confusion associated with this regiment because of the multiple designations it was known by at various points in the war. The unit was initially designated the 1st (Carroll’s) Arkansas Cavalry Regiment. Later it was known as the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry Regiment. It was also called Carroll’s Cavalry Regiment, Thompson’s Cavalry Regiment and Gordon’s Cavalry Regiment. The Compiled service records of the unit are filed under the 4th (Gordon’s) Arkansas Cavalry Regiment, and it is that designation used here and in the roster. "Gordon's" refers to Colonel Anderson Gordon who led the regiment from its redesignation as the 4th Arkansas Cavalry on 15 Dec 1863.
Company D of this regiment was raised in Johnson County. Company C contained 26 Johnson County men, primarily from that portion of the county south of the Arkansas River. A scattering of other Johnson County men served in the regiment, the most numerous of the remainder being ten men in Company K. The initial mustering in of Company D was on 31 May 1862 at Clarksville.
