Re: What ARK unit was J. H. Henry with?

George, There were more than 31 Confederates buried at the Waldschmidt as a result of the Battle of Shiloh. However there were 31 Confederates re-interred to the Camp Chase Cemetery in 1869 by Captain Irving of the Quartermasters Department. For some unknown reason the other Confederates were buried at the Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio. At least two of the Confederates if my memory is correct are buried at Spring Grove and have Union markers. The other Confederates re-interred from Waldschmidt to Spring Grove do have Confederate markers and it seems they were just overlooked when the quartermasters department made the move with the 31 Confederates to Chase. A strange occurrence took place with the move in 1869. Some Confederate privates had been buried at Waldschmidt in the days and weeks following Shiloh but some now show up as 1st lieutenants on their tombstones at the Chase Cemetery.

To see a listing of some of the Confederate dead who died at Waldschmidt you can go to my site using google at SCV Camp Chase and scroll down until you come to historical documents and Records and then click on Civil War dead at Camp Dennison. These records were copied from the Ohio Historical Society. You will notice at grave 15 at Waldschmidt the name of James H. Henry Company F 1st Arkansas Infantry. Also note I have made some errors under stories that I have not had a chance to correct yet.

If you will scroll down further you will see Confederate wounded and sick brought from Shiloh to Camp Dennison on the transport U.S.S. Magnolia. His name appears as J. H. Henry 1st Arkansas Infantry. This was a newspaper article by the Cincinnati Gazette on April 17, 1862 if my memory is correct.

There are other documents I need to post on the site concerning Shiloh but the Chase biographies have just kept me too busy. They will be posted when I get a chance in the future.

Like you George, I'm not so sure he was with the 1st Arkansas Infantry but the Union POW Records and other records all report that he was. Waldschmidt made some surname errors but most of them were not common names such as Henry. I also looked for Henry James as once in a blue moon the names are reversed but no luck.
