Re: What ARK unit was J. H. Henry with?

The 1st Arkansas Regiment 30-Day Volunteers was, as the name implies, in service for just 30 days (November-December 1861), all of which were spent at Camp Borland, near Pocahontas, Arkansas. They were not engaged at Shiloh. James Henry was the "J. Henry" listed in Company A. This company was recruited in Randolph County and vicinity.

The 30-day volunteers are an interesting side note, the result of the panic Col. Solon Borland found himself in when he falsely concluded that a Federal invasion of northeast Arkansas was imminent. Acting on his own authority, he sent out a call for volunteers throughout northeast Arkansas, and succeeded in getting about two dozen companies, which he swore in for 30 days. The invasion never occurred, and the troops were disbanded and sent home. Borland's correspondence during this period reflects his near state of hysteria. Very interesting reading.
