Re: African-Americans in the 33rd Arkansas Infantr

In examining these slave enlistements there is something that I do not understand. All of them were enlisted at Camp Bragg. But their dates of enlistments range from October 1862 until January 1864. Surely some of the dates must be in error.

I am aware that the 33rd Arkansas was not at Camp Bragg for that entire period. Especially during the Little Rock Campaign August to September 1863. Of interest, one is listed as being "discharged" and another records that he had never been paid. This tends to indicate to me that these men were "Contract labor", because as you said to have been enrolled on the Company records would have been unusual. The statement that that slave had never been paid is unusual in that it seems to indicate that these men were paid directly and not their Masters, which was the usual practise. Of course this entry could be simple noting a debt owed to the Master which had never been paid for the Slaves services.

Was Camp Bragg maybe a replacement/recruiting depot?
