In scanning through the 33rd Arkansas Muster rolls (Mr Howerton highlighted those of african origins) it would seem that most of the Negro servants (cooks) including Albert, were enlisted in October 1863.

This was not unusual at that time in that many regiments hired slaves from area Plantation owners to fulfill the needs of the regiment to allow the solders to preform other military duties, such as picket duties. The fact that their names are entered into the company records would seem to indicate that they (or usually their masters) recieved payment for their services. The standard payment for these duties was usually $33.00 a month (three times the pay of a common Private).

While Albert was enlisted in Company "G" it does not indicate that he was from Columbia County, Arkansas as were most of the soldiers of that Company. As the enlistment indicate that they were while the 33rd was at Camp Bragg?

The Battle of Little Rock which was fought September 10th, 1863 would have played a good part in the movements and activities of the 33rd ARk. during that period of time. Since the 33Rd Arkansas was involved in the Battle of Fouche Bayou I would guess that these Negro cooks were from the Little Rock Area. Several of them may have came from the same owner. A suggestion would be to check the 1860 Slave census off Pulaski County and see if their names show up.
