Anthony they probably were .69 calibers.

It would have been rare indeed for the majority of them to have been armed with anything else other than the 1816's, on up to the 1842's. Short of an Ordanance report I would doubt that we would really be able to know because are far as I can determine no regiment in the Trans-Mississippi were exclusively armed with all the same types of weapons. As you are well aware that with the advent of the Rifle Musket that standard army practise, because of the initial shortage of the rifle Musket, was to arm only the flank companies with those weapons (i.e. Companies "A" and "B") with the remaining companies being armed with the more common .69 caliber smoothbore muskets. I do not see any reason for the Confederate army not to follow that practise with their shotage of 1st class weapons

The majority of weapons supplied to the Trans-Mississippi in 1862 (maybe 12,000 arms) from the Eastern Theaters were castoff obsolete .69 Caliber weapons after the Eastern Armies had resupplied themselves with better battlefield pickups. Walkers Texas division in April 1863 were looking forward to engaging the enemy in the hope of obtain better weapons from them. The most I have ever seen in records of being armed with the .58 caliber 1853 Enfields, the 1855 and 1861 Springfield and yes even the 1862 Richmond was no more than one or two companies per regiment being armed with them.

I can not image the logistics problems that would create. But even as late as the Battle of Pine Bluff in October 1863 one of the primary objectives of that Battle for Gen. Maraduke was the capture of the small arms of the 5th Kansas Cavalry which was armed with Sharps Carbines and Colt pistols.

Richmond was very jealous of the Arms and supplies which were destined for the eastern theaters. Until the fall of Vicksburg interupted the flow of these supplies by blockade runners from Mexico and Texas most of the first class arms never stopped in the Trans-Mississippi Department.
