Mark, William Nathaniel Smith was from Dallas County. He enlisted in the "Tulip Rifles", Co. I, 3rd Arkansas Infantry, at Tulip, Arkansas, on June 25, 1861; and was mustered into Confederate service with his company at Lynchburg, Virginia, on July 5, 1861, for three years or the war. He was appointed third sergeant on July 26, 1861. While back home on furlough, he was transferred to Co. F, 26th Arkansas Infantry, on September 30, 1862. As you know, soldiers who came back on furlough were routinely "detained" and attached to regiments serving in Arkansas. He apparently served with the 26th Arkansas to the end of the war. In some soldier reminiscences he is referred to by his nickname, "Bill Nat."

He was born in Hardeman County, Tennessee, on January 13, 1836; and died at Malvern, Arkansas, on April 20, 1905. He is interred in Oak Ridge Cemetery at Malvern. He married Clarissa Barbee Coleman in Dallas County on October 5, 1870. She applied for a Confederate widow's pension from Hot Spring County in 1910 (Pension No. 18736).
