Hi James,

Thanks for refreshing my memory regarding the source of the information as to the capture of the colors attributed to Hart's Arkansas Battery. I recalled reading "somewhere" about the capture, but drew a blank as to the source. Yes, it was a Union after-action report. I assumed that the Yanks knew about the "Dallas Artillery" moniker from captured members of Hart's battery. The Pea Ridge NMP website has a picture of Hart's battery colors. It has a cannon emblem, but no lettering of any kind.

I know of no Confederate source that specifically mentions the capture of Hart's battery colors. Van Dorn accused Captain Hart of cowardice and disbanded his battery in disgrace, after Hart's battery "fled" the field, leaving much baggage and equipment (but no guns) behind. A court of inquiry subsequently absolved Hart of the charge, and rescinded the order disbanding his battery. Also cleared by the court were several non-commissioned officers who were also charged by Van Dorn. The speculation has always been that if Hart's colors were indeed captured by the enemy, it was due to the colors having been abandoned on the field in its hasty departure. If I recall correctly, the colors of the 17th Arkansas Regiment were found abandoned on the field.
