Reed, age 18, enlisted as a Private in Company G (Brownsville Rifles), 5th Arkansas Infantry, June 10, 1861 at Brownsville, Arkansas, sent to Marietta, Georgia Hospital fall of 1863, reenlisted for the war at Tunnel Hill, Georgia February 17, 1864, captured at Jonesboro, Georgia August 29, 1864, forwarded to Louisville, Ky. via Nashville, Tn. October 27, 1864, sent two days later to Camp Douglas, Illinois prison camp, discharged May 15, 1865 at Camp Douglas, resident of Prairie County, Arkansas, fair complexion, dark hair, brown eyes, 5' 10" [Compiled Service Records]

5th Regiment, Arkansas Infantry

5th Infantry Regiment, recruited in the Pine Bluff area, was assembled at Gainesville, Arkansas, in July, 1861. The regiment was transferred to Bowling Green, Kentucky, then fought at Perryville. It was assigned to General Liddell's and Govan's Brigade, and consolidated with the 13th Arkansas Regiment in September, 1863. The unit participated in the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Murfreesborough to Nashville, then saw action in North Carolina. It was organized with 722 officers and men and lost forty-two percent of the 336 at Murfreesboro. The 5th/13th lost forty-five percent of the 450 engaged at Chickamauga, had 21 men disabled at Ringgold Gap, totalled 321 men and 222 arms in December, 1863, and reported 112 casualties at the Battle of Atlanta. Only a remnant surrendered in April, 1865. The field officers were David C. Cross, Lucius Featherston, Peter V. Green, and J. E. Murray; Lieutenant Colonels E. A. Howell and B. F. Sweeney; and Majors T. W. Ellsberry and Riddick Pope.

Fifth Arkansas infantry

The Fifth Arkansas infantry was organized at Gaines-
ville, Ark., in July, 1861, electing as its officers Col. D. C.
Cross, Lieut.-Col. S. L. Sweeney; Maj. R. Pope. The
staff was Adjt. Joe, Dunlap, Quartermaster E. Mallory,
Commissary B. Crump. The regiment was transferred
to the regular Confederate army in September. Its cap-
tains were : Company A, Will H. Trader; Company B,
L. R. Frisk ; Company C, Bohannan ; Company D, Peter
Green; Company E, White; Company F, Grant Smith;
Company G, R. S. Gantt; Company H, J. S. Kuykendall;
Company I, Robert Jingles; Company K, L. P. Feather-
ston. The regiment was transferred to Columbus, thence
to Bowling Green, and was in the battle of Perryville
under Gen. T. C. Hindman, commanding the First bri-
gade. While in Kentucky, John Edward Murray was
made lieutenant-colonel, upon the resignation of Lieuten-
ant-Colonel Sweeney. When Corinth was evacuated on
the approach of Halleck and Grant in May, 1862, the reg-
iment fell back with the Confederate army to Tupelo.
Here it was reorganized, and Capt. L. P. Featherston was
elected colonel, J. E. Murray, lieutenant-colonel, and Capt.
Peter Green, major; J. J. Winston was appointed adju-
tant. Murray, who was made colonel after the death of
Colonel Featherston, was killed on the road between
Atlanta and Decatur while commanding the Fifth Ar-
kansas, having received that day his commission as brig-
adier-general "for gallantry on the field of battle." He
was a resident of Pine Bluff, where his father was presid-
ing judge of the Jefferson circuit court.
