Dennis - I agree that the surgeons probably jotted down information on past illnesses based on what the patient told them at the time. As far as company records are concerned, there are so many gaps, and the fact that two of the three periods reported for Bozeman were for longer than the standard two months, much time is available for all sorts of conditions that might not have made it to the muster rolls. I've seen some Orderly Sergeants make note that a man was "sick in camp", but I'm betting that not all did that, and that "present" did not necessarily mean "fit for duty". I could be wrong there and stand to be corrected if so.
