Hi Rick, Totally agree with you about him not having any illness on his company records. However on his POW Records on page 11 at fold 3 it says he died on December 24, 1864 due to Typhoid Malaria Fever and buried as you accurately stated in grave 1706. The original information within the Medical and Surgical History confirms this within a day or two of his death and has him admitted to the Rock Island Hospital on December 22, 1864 due to Typhoid Malaria Fever. Since the surgeons performed a post-mortem (autopsy) on him twelve hours after his death, I'm inclined to believed he died on December 23, 1864. Federal POW Records reported his death of December 24, 1864 but all in all it's close enough for me and probably you also.
