George's response is correct. The record you saw states, "Register of Officers and Soldiers of the Army of the Confederate States who were killed in battle or who died of wounds or wounds or disease." The date stated, Sept 4, 1862, clearly indicates that the soldier died of disease. This was long before the regiment actually saw action for the first time at Port Gibson MS, May 1, 1863.

The Civil War location of Bean's Station TN is underwater today.
