I believe that the common thread that motivated the Southern soul was not their Christian beliefs, but their Masonic beliefs!
I would be very interested to see the comparitive numbers between how many Southern men were members of a Church verses the number that were members of a Masonic Lodge. I am quite sure that there were far more that found their moral convictions in the tenets of Masonry.
