Miles, I am afraid that you have a misconception about Freemasonry in thinking that there were possibly more Freemasons than Christians or church members in the South. This cannot possibly be true. While church membership per se is not a requirement for Masonic membership, declared belief in God is required and there are few Masons that are not also members of a church of the religion of their personal choice. The moral bonds of the fraternity are strong, but there were and are certainly many more church members in the South , and the world for that matter, than there were and are Freemasons.
